Pain Management in St. Albert
Still in Pain After Trying Everything Else?
You've tried physiotherapy, medication, injections, or other treatments, but your pain is still affecting your daily life. When pain persists or keeps returning, it can be helpful to take a broader look at the factors that may be contributing to it.
At St. Albert Naturopathic Clinic, our naturopathic doctors take a comprehensive approach to persistent and chronic pain. We look at your pain history, overall health, lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, stress, previous injuries and other factors that may be relevant to your symptoms.
Our goal is to understand the bigger picture and develop an individualized naturopathic treatment plan that fits your needs and works alongside appropriate medical or physical rehabilitation care.

When Pain Persists, It May Be Time to Look at the Bigger Picture
Pain can have many contributing factors. An injury, surgery or other physical problem may be only one part of the picture, while sleep, stress, nutrition, inflammation, nervous system sensitivity, physical activity and other aspects of health may also influence how pain is experienced and how well the body recovers.
Physiotherapy, medical care and other forms of treatment can be important parts of managing pain. Naturopathic medicine can complement these approaches by providing another perspective and considering the broader factors that may be contributing to persistent symptoms.
Rather than focusing only on the location of your pain, we take time to understand your health history, what you've already tried, what has helped, what hasn't, and what you would like to be able to do again.
How Naturopathic Pain Care Works
1. Comprehensive Assessment
Your first visit includes a detailed review of your pain history, previous injuries or procedures, treatments you've tried, medications and supplements, lifestyle factors and overall health.
Depending on your concerns, your naturopathic doctor may also perform an appropriate physical examination and determine whether laboratory testing, further investigation or referral to another healthcare professional would be appropriate.
The goal is to develop a clearer picture of the factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.
2. An Individualized Treatment Plan
There is no single treatment that works for every type of pain. Your treatment plan is individualized according to your symptoms, health history, goals and preferences.
Depending on your needs and your naturopathic doctor's assessment, treatment may include acupuncture, muscle release acupuncture, nutritional and dietary recommendations, herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, lifestyle strategies or other naturopathic treatments within the doctor's scope of practice.
3. Ongoing Care & Coordination
Persistent pain often requires adjustments over time. Follow-up visits allow your naturopathic doctor to assess how you are responding and modify your treatment plan when appropriate.
Naturopathic care can also be provided alongside physiotherapy, medical care and other appropriate healthcare services. If your symptoms require investigation or treatment outside the scope of naturopathic medicine, we will discuss this with you and recommend appropriate follow-up or referral.

How Naturopathic Medicine Can Support Pain Management
Acupuncture & Muscle Release Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the treatment options naturopathic doctors may use for pain management. Depending on the type and location of pain, acupuncture may be incorporated into an individualized treatment plan.
Herbal Medicine & Nutritional Supplementation
Nutrition and targeted supplementation may be considered as part of a broader approach to health and pain management. Your naturopathic doctor can assess your diet, nutritional status, medications and other factors when determining whether supplementation is appropriate.
IV Therapy
For appropriate patients, intravenous nutrient therapy may be incorporated into a naturopathic treatment plan. Whether IV therapy is appropriate depends on your health history, clinical assessment and individual needs.
Lifestyle & Dietary Guidance
Sleep, nutrition, physical activity, stress and other lifestyle factors can influence overall health and how the body responds to pain. Addressing these factors can be an important part of a comprehensive approach to persistent pain.

Your Questions, Answered
Have questions about pain management? We're here to help you understand your journey to natural health.
What can contribute to chronic pain and inflammation?
Persistent pain can have many contributing factors. Depending on the individual, these may include previous injury, ongoing tissue irritation, physical activity, sleep, stress, nutrition, inflammation and nervous system factors. Your naturopathic doctor will assess your individual history rather than assuming there is one cause of your symptoms.
Can hormones influence headaches, migraines or body pain?
Hormonal changes can influence symptoms such as headaches and migraines in some people. Your naturopathic doctor can review your symptoms, health history and other relevant factors to determine whether hormonal factors may be worth considering.
Can my diet affect inflammation and pain?
Nutrition can influence overall health and may be relevant to some inflammatory and pain conditions. Your naturopathic doctor can assess your current diet and recommend practical nutritional changes based on your individual needs.
Can dehydration or electrolyte imbalances contribute to muscle pain?
Dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities can contribute to symptoms such as muscle cramps, weakness or fatigue in some circumstances. If your symptoms suggest that this may be relevant, your naturopathic doctor can determine whether further assessment is appropriate.
What if naturopathic care doesn't resolve my pain?
Not every treatment works for every person, and persistent pain can require care from multiple healthcare professionals. If your symptoms are not improving as expected, we will reassess your treatment plan and discuss whether another type of assessment, treatment or referral would be appropriate.
